# Classes and subjects

> Setting up the classes your school runs and the subjects taught in each of them.

## Classes

EduControl covers the full Ghanaian basic school range:

| Programme       | Classes                     |
| --------------- | --------------------------- |
| Early childhood | Creche, Nursery, KG 1, KG 2 |
| Primary         | Basic 1 – Basic 6           |
| Junior high     | JHS 1 – JHS 3               |

Set up only the classes you actually run. Every class you create becomes a column in the [fee matrix](/docs/fees/fee-matrix) and a row in the [feeding rates](/docs/fees/feeding-rates) table, so an unused class is a column of empty prices somebody will eventually ask about.

Where a class runs more than one stream, create each stream as its own class — registers, timetables and report cards are all produced per class.

## Subjects

Subjects are defined once for the school, then attached to the classes that teach them. A subject attached to a class is what makes it appear in that class's gradebook and timetable.

  Attach subjects before the term's first test. The gradebook lists a class's attached subjects, so a subject added halfway through a term starts with no marks behind it, and teachers have to go back for them.

## Class teachers

Each class has a form master or class teacher. That assignment decides:

* Whose **My Day** dashboard shows the class's register
* Who can mark that class **Ready** for report cards
* Whose remark appears as the class teacher's comment on the report card

Subject teachers are assigned per class subject, and enter marks only for the subjects they teach.

## Changing classes mid-year

Renaming a class is safe — it is the same class, and its history follows it. Deleting one is not: enrolments, invoices and marks all point at it. If a class stops running, stop enrolling pupils into it rather than removing it, so last term's records still read correctly.
